Built in a thesis. Open to further research.
5G on Wheels is a private 5G Standalone research platform at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, Department of Design Computer Science Media.
The project contribution
In his master’s thesis, “Konzeption und Realisierung eines 5G-on-Wheels Campusnetzes– Use-Case Wetterstation”, Nicolas Moeller designed and implemented the campus network. He evaluated vendors, selected and procured the components, addressed regulatory requirements and prepared the frequency application. His work also covered hardware assembly, network configuration and integration into the campus infrastructure, along with deployment and test automation, the InfoAPI exporter and documented validation.
Observability as part of the platform
Nicolas Moeller integrated metrics, logs and traffic metadata into a shared diagnostic environment. His work includes measurement points, data sources, Grafana dashboards and a custom InfoAPI exporter for subscriber, gNB and session states. Prometheus, Grafana, Alloy, Loki and Zeek provide the underlying tools.
Built with existing systems
Open5GS provides the core, Amarisoft runs the gNB, and CableFree supplies the radio hardware. Prometheus, Grafana, Alloy, Loki and Zeek provide established observability tools. The project brings these components together and documents how to operate and investigate the resulting network.
What “on Wheels” means
The long-term aim is a movable laboratory with a shared wagon and adjustable mast. The current implementation has a transportable radio site and a stationary campus core. Moving equipment between prepared locations is different from continuous connectivity while moving.
